Max Gentlemen Sexy Business

Synopsis
Good old fashioned Victorian sexiness
Max Gentlemen Sexy Business is a management game with VN elements released in February 2020. It was developed and published by The Men Who Wear Many Hats, who had previously released Organ Trail: Directors Cut, a 2d Zombie survival game released in 2013, and the precursor to the game being reviewed, Max Gentlemen. A free game about stacking hats, released in 2014.
After having all your wealth stolen by your rival, you team up with 12 gentlepersons to buy more money and win the day! Each person on your team is hot, horny, pansexual, and polyamorous. Trim your mustache, practice your fisting at the gym, and beat up smaller, weaker companies, to gain back your stolen honor!
Sexy Business starts off with yo creating your "Gentsona" and your rival. There are several costumes and body types to choose from. This early in the game you can already see the care that went into making this as inclusive an experience as possible. You can pick between masculine, feminine, and neutral pronouns, pick between different body types and ethnicities, and pick what clothes you wear. Unfortunately, there isn't a really a good selection of clothes for the Player-Gent. Your options are fully clothed in victorian fashion, or completely naked. I always feel like skimpy clothing is sexier than being outright nude, so I wish there was more variety in quantity of clothing. I assume that this was an effort-saving measure, as revealing clothes would have to closely match the underlying body, which is fairly customizable.
You get one worker-gent from the beginning, and can end up with all 12 in your arsenal by the end of the game. While your gentsona can have just about any combination of primary and secondary sexual characteristics, allowing the player to play whatever gender they like, the NPC Gentlemen are 6 cis women and 6 cis men. Additionally 10 of the 12 characters are white, which may be accurate to London of the time period, nothing else about this game is accurate so seems like since their goal was total inclusion and positivity, they probably could have improved that aspect a bit. As for the Gents's personalities, they're quite varied. You have a mad scientist, an ocult fanatic, a lascivious brothel madam, a plucky tomboy mystery solver, and more. While the underlying thread of all the characters is one of sexiness, the rest of their story is well fleshed out and I was happy that each date with each character was different.
I hope you like the screenshot above this paragraph, because honestly that's what you're going to be looking at for 95% of the time you play this game. In sheer comparison of time, I feel like I could probably play this game on a big TV in a room with a priest, a mormon, and the ghost of my grandmother, and none of them would notice that this is an erogame. While this core gameplay loop is addicting (and make no mistake, it's severely addicting) I would be hard pressed to call it particularly fun. Time moves way too slow, and not in a way that adds challenge, rather it feels like to pad out the game. The lag time between menial tasks feels like forever, especially early on when your characters are low leveled. What's worse is that right when you get to the fun point of this gameplay, when you've got a rhythm and an economy and you're actually having fun, the chapter ends and to continue the story you start back at square one. To complete the story you have to start from 0 a total of 3 times, each time taking about twice as long as the last. I would have preferred they just condense everything and make it a shorter game. The amount of time unnecessarily added to this game makes it feel like they're desperately trying to seem worth the $20 price point.
To grow your affection meter with each gent, you can take them on lunch dates or take their advice during events. A lunch date always ends up with a mini-game like black jack, spin the bottle, or arm wrestling. These were cute at first but after you've played each type of game (there are about 5 or 6) it starts to get repetitive. That's actually kind of the theme for this game. Fun at first, then repetitive and kind of boring, but you can't stop.
Horny Parts
-
Dialogue
There is a lot of dialogue in this game. Enough for me to call it a VN. The only problem is that it's a LOT of V and almost no N. Most of the sexy dialogue is put in a small window over a blank background. You're left to fend with nothing but your imagination. Luckily mine is very... vivid, but still disappointing.
-
Massage
As romance blossoms between you and the other gents, one of the mini-games you'll unlock is to give them a massage. The hands move up and down their body and you have to click at the correct time. The gent is completely static and doesn't move.
-
Black and White Pictures
As you date a gent, eventually you will unlock their black and white picture. First the censored version, and then the uncensored version. I'm not sure what it is but something about these is really "uncanny valley" to me and none of the gents seem as sexy as they usually are when drawn in this way. (it's not the extra muscles, I'm cool with that).
-
Costumes
With each date you go on with a gent, you will unlock a new costume for them. Some of them are sexy, some of them are just normal clothes. Featured in the following screenshot is one of my favorites <3
-
Erotica
Every once in a while a merchant will pop up in the town square and you can buy some erotica from him. This happens frequently enough that you can get every copy in a single playthrough. Honestly what I like most about these is the cover art, which gives us a rare rendering of a gent in an actual sexy way. Most of the sexiness happens in text and small images in the corner of the screen, but some of these are really great. They each contain a short story involving the gent in question.
-
Gent Renders
When you start dating a gent you unlock a render of them fully clothed. When you complete their romance story you get the nude version.
Horniest Part
- Business Maid
She's the hottest. Hands down. She has the best lines and the best costumes. She's actually what resulted in me buying this game. In the Steam trailer is a tiddy animation of her, and the second I saw that I said out loud to myself "I'm buying this game". I was intensely disappointed to find out that there is virtually no animation in this game. There's more animation in the trailer than you'll find in the whole-ass game. It's a decent game in its own right but I do feel a little mislead. I was hoping for animated heavy maid tiddies, but they were static the whole time. Here's the video in question.
Rating
Neutral
I appreciate what this game was going for. I really dig idea of an erogame based around sex positivity. Unfortunately this game falls short in gameplay, and definitely doesn't provide enough non-text based lewd content. If it was cheaper and the gameplay loop was a little shorter, sure. But for how much work it takes for the amount of tiddy-pixels I got, it felt overpriced. I would absolutely play a sequel though, this game has good bones and could be turned into something great.
Additional Things of Note
From now until the end of time, any time I get to name my rival in a game, their name will be Dr. Bitch.
