Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal

Synopsis
Bigger, Better, Smoother
Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal is a ninja-based beat-em-up (or bmup) created by Marvelous Inc / HONEY PARADE GAMES and licensed to and published by XSEED Games / Marvelous USA Inc. It's a remake of Senran Kagura Burst for the 3DS (Senran Kagura: Skirting Shadows in Japan). Re:Newal takes the story from Burst gives the gameplay and graphics a total overhaul. While the original is a classic, it had serious framerate issues. The new version fixes all those issues, and brings the gameplay into 3 dimensions a la Estival Versus.
Senran Kagura follows the lives of 10 Highschool girl ninjas. Five are training at the Hanzo School (good shinobi) and five at Hebijo (evil shinobi). The two groups of girls are at constant odds as the Hebijo seek to steal the Super Secret Ninja Scroll. The scroll will give them unimaginable power, and the Hanzo can't let that happen.
You pick which side you want to follow, and see the story unfold from that perspective. Whether you pick the good or evil shinobi, both have compelling reasons for their actions. Throughout the story each Shinobi reveals their backstory and reason for fighting. Despite the fact that this game is all about the tiddy, the storylines are great.
There's another DLC storyline you can get that follows the Gessen Girls Academy, but you only play as the main character (and current brand mascot) Yumi. You don't even get to see the shinobi transformations of the other Gessen girls. They're already transformed before you even start the fights.
The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who's played Shinovi Vs or Estival Vs. You pick a fighter, or the game picks one for you if it's a story mission, and you fight hoards of badguys. The combat is very simple and pulling off combos only requires two buttons. In many missions after you defeat the mobs, you go up against another shinobi who is much harder to defeat. Each mission has a segment of the story, which has an automatic skip button if you don't care about it. All the active gameplay is in the fighting.
There are three different combat modes.
- Normal Mode This is the mode you usually enter the fight in. The chosen ninja is in her pre-transformation clothes with limited combo ability.
- Shinobi Mode This is the mode your chosen girl is in after you activate transformation. She gets a new outfit, gets healed, has better combos, and can use special moves.
- Frantic Mode At the beginning of most missions you have the ability to choose Frantic Mode. Your girl will start the round already stripped, and have higher damage potential. The tradeoff is that it only takes a couple of hits to kill you. This wouldn't be so bad on its own, but it takes longer than it should to get to retry.
The more passive gameplay elements include the Dressing Room, and Intimacy Mode. The Dressing Room lets you pick the pre and post transformation appearance. You can control clothes, hair, complexion, and underwear style. Intimacy mode allows you to touch your favorite ninja. If you input the correct sequence, you can even get a kiss. The PS4 version of this game lacks this mode because of Sony's newfound aversion to horniness.
Horny Parts
The following is a list of Horny components in this game, in order from least horny to most horny
-
Dressing Room
There's quite a few good outfits to choose from with varying degrees of sexiness, but all the REALLY horny outfits require you to buy them as DLC.
-
Intimacy
Ordinarily I would put Intimacy as the horniest part, but unlike Estival Versus or Peach Beach Splash, there's no water-gun mode anymore. You can kiss the girls though but that's not really all that lewd.
-
Diorama
You can dress up and pose the ninja girls, but all the good poses are locked behind DLC
-
Clothing Damage
Like any respectable game, when the shinobi get damaged, eventually their clothes explode. This persists until the end of the mission.
If you do enough damage during the battle, at the end the girls' underwear is destroyed. However, unlike other SN games, when you're back in dialogue parts they magically have underwear again. They really toned down the horniness in this version.
-
Frantic Mode
In most missions you have the option to start aready in the character's underwear
-
Transformation
The girls' clothing blows away, and then new clothes appear on them when they transform into shinobi mode. Each girl has a unique animation while transforming.
-
Sexy Demons
Some stages have secret demon fights, and I think it's the only part of the game that has actual visible nipples
Horniest Part
- This Hibari Artwork Just Chillin In The Combo Screen
Straight up, Hibari has no right looking this horny on some random screen.
Additional things of note
If you bought all the DLC for this game it would cost $117. That's still not the most I've seen though. The DLC outfits for Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 adds up to well over $1000, despite the outfits being unlockable for free. (None of the DLC outfits for Senran Kagura Burst Re:Newal are unlockable for free)
There are at least two canonically lesbian characters in this game: Yagyu and Katsuragi. While Yagyu only has eyes for Hibari, Katsuragi is horny for everyone. Kat is the epitome of "open shirt lesbian"
Ikaruga's shinobi theme is incredibly badass. It's like a rad Phantom of the Opera remix.
Homura's theme is very similar to Guile's theme.
Rating
Positive
I like just about any game with the Senran Kagura characters in it. I like how despite its horniness, it can be wholesome and depressing at the same time. While it sucks that the Gessen DLC only lets you play as Yumi (the girl most fans hate the most), the rest is fun and faithful to the original. while changing it up enough to still feel fresh. I worried that because I already knew the story, it would be boring. But I found myself hardly ever skipping dialogue, though I remembered most of it. The story definitely still holds up. Burst Re:Newal is definitely a step down in horniness from Peach Beach Splash or Estival Versus. Despite that, it still has a lot of that lewd charm that the SK series has mastered.
